How to prepare for a software engineer interview at Uber: real-time and marketplace system design, and practical coding.

Updated 2026-09

Overview

Uber interviews emphasize real-time, geo, and marketplace systems. System design rounds lean into dispatching, geospatial indexing, and consistency under high concurrency.

Interview process

Phone screen: 1 coding round.
Onsite: 2 coding, 1-2 system design, and behavioral; design rounds often start from a real Uber problem.

What Uber looks for

Real-time and distributed systems intuition.
Geospatial and concurrency reasoning.
Pragmatic, production-minded engineering.
Ownership of features end-to-end.

Common questions

Coding: graph and interval problems, plus concurrency-aware questions.
System design: design Uber ride-hailing, a driver location tracker, or a surge pricing service.
Behavioral: a time you owned a hard on-call issue; scaling a service under load.
