The problem at Google

Google uses this problem to assess algorithmic rigor and generalist problem-solving. Expect Google-specific follow-ups that tie the solution back to production reasoning and the company's engineering bar.

What Google looks for

Algorithmic fluency — the right data structure and the optimal complexity, fast.
Googleyness — comfort with ambiguity, intellectual curiosity, and a collaborative style.
Leadership and impact — especially at L4+; evidence of driving outcomes.
Communication — explaining your thinking as you solve.

Google-specific tips

Optimize past the brute force — interviewers will push you to improve complexity.
Talk constantly: narrate your thinking so the interviewer can guide you.
For system design, start with requirements and capacity, then box-and-arrow, then deep dives.

Reduce a 2D table to two 1D rows to save space.
Reconstruct the actual solution, not just the value.
Handle the bottom-up vs top-down-with-memoization trade-off.
